In questo volume abbiamo voluto raccogliere, sotto forma di appunti, tutte le informazioni e le notizie rinvenute sulla maggiore rete ferroviaria coloniale italiana: quella dell’Eritrea. Lo scopo non è quello di ricordare l’epopea coloniale, ma una delle più belle ed ardite linee ferroviarie mai costruite dagli italiani, non a caso definita “Il Gottardo d’Africa”, e la tenacia con cui il popolo eritreo ha prima salvato, e poi ricostruito, quel gioiello di tecnica che risponde al nome di ferrovia Massaua-Asmara (Tessenei), sulla quale hanno prestato servizio oltre 70 locomotive a scartamento ridotto di 950 mm, molte delle quali progettate dall’Ufficio Studi Locomotive di Firenze e appositamente costruite per l’esercizio di questa linea. Una linea dal profilo e dall’orografia difficile, sempre vulnerabile di fronte a devastanti ed improvvise alluvioni e frane che ne hanno costellato l’esistenza sino ai grandi lavori di protezione della metà degli anni trenta. Ma giova ricordare anche la grandiosa teleferica costruita tra Massaua Campo di Marte ed Asmara, un altro prodigio tecnico, tra le più lunghe ed ardite al mondo oltre alla fitta rete di ferrovie decauville che negli anni hanno contribuito allo sviluppo di questa terra d’Africa.
