The engineers were Scottish, the early steam locomotives were built in England and Scotland, the gauge was 5’3″ as in Ireland, and the stations and infrastructure would have appeared perfectly at home on any railway of the pre-grouping period in Britain. Cowlairs-style inclines were constructed to conquer a jungle-covered mountain range and were operated with steam powered brake vans. The British-owned São Paulo Railway carried coffee to the port of Santos on Brazil’s Atlantic coast and used Garratts for express passenger haulage. It was a very British Railway indeed – but built in South America. Even into the diesel and electric era the British influence remained in evidence as Armstrong-Whitworth built express diesel railcars and English Electric supplied the first main-line electric locos and e.m.u.s. Photographs from enthusiasts who have visited this railway bring the story more up to date with American-built diesels and electrics and the conversion to rack haulage with Japanese-built electrics. Today the line is operated by a freight company with leased diesels but part of the duplicated route with steam-hauled inclines has been preserved and survives, including winding engines and brake locomotives. The inspiration for this book came from Trevor Rowe when he showed the author an exceptional album of official photographs dating from around 1920, which just begged to be seen by a wider audience. The full story behind building this remarkable railway has since been uncovered and more photographs of the line and its locomotives have been traced. A number of regular „Locomotives International“ contributors provided further information, in particular Reg Carter of the Stephen Locomotive Society who assisted research by making available his South American locomotive list and official São Paulo Railway diagrams.

When construction of the Madeira-Mamoré Railroad began in 1867, Bolivia had lost its war with Chile, causing it to become landlocked and unable to ship its minerals and other products from the Pacific Coast. Since Bolivia needed to find a way to move products from the Atlantic Coast, the government decided a railroad should be built around the Madeira River — which originates in Bolivia and travels almost 2,000 miles through Brazil to the Amazon — facilitating shipment to foreign markets via the Amazonian waterway. Completion of the railroad was initially stalled by lack of funding, but the project was resurrected in the early twentieth century and completed in 1912. Intended as an integral piece of the rubber export industry, the railroad became unnecessary once the world supply of rubber moved from Brazil to Asia. Although there have been many brief chronicles and writings about the Madeira-Mamoré Railroad over the years, most barely scratch the surface of this incredible story. Of particular import in Tracks in the Amazon are the photographs — which until now have rarely been seen — taken by Dana Merrill, a New York photographer hired to document the construction of the railroad. It also includes reproductions of the Porto Velho Marconigram, an English-language newspaper written for and by the American expatriates who lived in the construction headquarters at Porto Velho. Because this unique railroad traversed the densest tropical jungle on earth, more than 10,000 workers lost their lives laying the first five miles of track. The images and descriptions of the life of the workers on the railroad illustrate the challenges of working in the jungles — the unforgiving climate, malaria and yellow feverbearing mosquitoes, and the threat of wild animals — which made conditions for the workers next to impossible. This book was first published in a Portuguese-language edition in 2011 by BEI Comunicao Ltda with the title Trilhos na selva: O dia a dia dos trabalhadores da ferrovia Madeira-Mamore. Finalist for the International Latino Book Awards: Best Book in Nonfiction in Portuguese.

Summerhill, William R.: Order Against Progress. Government, Foreign Investment, and Railroads in Brazil, 1854-1913: Stanford University Press . o. J. [?] – 297 p. : Ill. – How did foreign investment in infrastructure affect a relatively backward Latin American economy? The author engages this long-standing issue in Latin American history by applying the methods of the “new economic history” to the study of Brazilian railway development.Railroads have long been viewed as having intensified Brazil’s dependence on foreign product and capital markets in the second half of the nineteenth century. Because steam locomotion in Brazil relied heavily on British finance in an age of export-led economic growth, many scholars have viewed railroads as magnifying economic dependency in ways that benefited foreign investors and export agriculture at the expense of the Brazilian economy as a whole. This study combines extensive archival research in Brazil and Britain with cliometric methods to present a new and provocative picture of the impact of railroads on the Brazilian economy. The book’s findings reveal that the savings on transport costs provided by the railroad accounted for a large share of the Brazilian economy’s gains before 1914. Indeed, thanks largely to the savings generated by railroad investments, in the early twentieth century Brazil emerged from decades of stagnation to become one of the Western world’s fastest growing economies. Moreover, foreign investors in Brazilian railroads failed to reap profits commensurate with the benefits their investments produced within Brazil: government policies on subsidy and regulation enabled Brazil to capture and retain most of the gains resulting from transport improvements. Combined with other significant changes of the era, railroad development favored immigration, the expansion of agriculture, and the growth of manufacturing in an economy that had long been laggard. In addition to drawing substantive conclusions about the Brazilian case, this book demonstrates that the techniques of the new economic history provide Latin American specialists with a rich array of tools to identify and assess the various consequences of technological and institutional change in historical perspective.
