The Andes rank as the world’s longest uninterrupted mountain range, extending over 4,000 miles parallel to the west coast of South America. With summits up to 20,000 ft, they act as a barrier separating the Pacific seaports from the mineral riches of Argentina, Chile, Peru and Bolivia. Few areas of the world can be less promising for the aspiring railway builder …added to the problems of topography are extremes of climate, regular geological instability, and continuous political barrier …a triumph of engineering skill and ingenuity over formidable natural obstacles. First published in 1963, „Railways of the Andes“ has been out of print for 30 years. This new Edition incorporates Fawcett’s oroginal text – unaltered and unexpurgated – plus a new Preface and Introduction. It includes some of Fawcett’s original maps, supplemented by some more detailed new cartography, ‚period‘ artwork and advertisements and a fine selection of photographs, dating from the 1870s, many being the work of the Author himself. Gonzáles Rodríguez, Sergio: Estaciones Ferroviarias del Gran Santiago, Providencia: Ricaaventura . [o. J.?] – 224 p. : fotografías a color; 24 x 17 cm

It was not until long after his grandmother, Sophie, had died, that Michael Jacobs was eventually permitted to read the lengthy and passionate letters that his grandfather Bethel had written her from nine thousand miles away. In these letters, Jacobs discovered a remarkable story of hardship, deprivation and enduring love. His grandfather’s work on the railway through the Andes was exhausting and desperately lonely. He had little in common with his fellow workers and became consumed by a mounting despondency, from which only his love for Sophie could save him. But, as the months and years of separation passed, the world in which Sophie was blossoming appeared more and more remote from his own. Michael Jacobs’ journey back through time takes him from a rain-swept Hull churchyard to desolate Antofagasta in Chile and to the former silver capital of Potosi. Climbing through ghostly, lunar-like scenery towards the snow-capped summits of the Andes, he follows the route of his grandfather’s railway – across giant rocky plateaux, through terrifyingly steep gorges and valleys of tropical lushness, and past grim mining townships buffeted by winds, rain and snow – to reveal an extraordinary love story.

By the end of the nineteenth century, Chile had natural resources to develop its mining and agricultural industries, but it still did not fully enter the frenzy; of the industrial revolution. This is due to an endemic lack of capital and economic transportation methods that will make businesses profitable. It will be the effort of a handful of entrepreneurs, both national and foreign, who will bring to the work the electricity that will shine; the new century and will move the new mining and agricultural industries of the country.  Its beginnings in Lota, back in 1896, when the first electric locomotive was introduced in Chile to solve the problem of contamination in the coal mine tunnels, until its replication in nitrate and copper mining, all, They were made at the risk and expense of private companies who believed that in this new technology as the solution to the different transport problems that prevented them from developing their businesses. Go to the anonymous who forge the Electric Railroads of Chile, a greeting and a work with pretensions, so that they are not forgotten those who left us a country that worked and in many cases continues to work, as the FC of Tocopilla to El Toco, on a electric rail laying as an important form of transport and industrial development.

„Chile received a lot of attention from european railway fans during the nineteenth and twentieth century for the great variety of special locomotives that existed in the country, especially in the north, where they were used to overcome the immense challenge of traveling along the coastal escarpment and Los Andes mountains. Between 1950 and 2000 we were visited by several british experts in railways who captured their research of our railways in separated books, referring to the history of the industrial railways in the north of our country. The last british researcher to visit Chile and study the Railways of the North and South was Wilfrid Simms, author of this magnificent work.“ (Ricaaventura) „The late Wilfrid Simms visited Chile in 1978 and 1987 and documented the great variety of the railways in a series of booklets, now out of print. His material is here presented in a large volume in Spanish. It gives information on about 130 railways and their motive Power, from North to South. The photographs appear to have been reproduced from the booklets and are interesting but of modest quality.“ (Stenvalls).

„Through much of the 20th century, railways in southern Chile endured a long period of decline, partially allayed by electrification from Santiago to Temuco in the 1960s and 1970s, with diesels south from there.  Steam lasted on  shunting  and  excursion  traffic  until  about  1984. Today, although the main line from Santiago to Puerto Montt survives, with a metre-gauge branch from Talca to Constitución, it carries only freight traffic beyond Chillán.  Fortunately, the photographer captured the dying days of steam on film and a selection of his work has been published with a commentary by the authors. The  quality  of  images  is  outstanding,  and  the reproduction  is  to  a  good  standard;  composition, camera angles and lighting are often highly original. There is a strong emphasis on railways in their social and topographical context, with scenery, passengers and railway staff adding to the generally atmospheric effect.  Indeed the book leaves a poignant impression of a once-vibrant transport network slowly decaying in a timeless landscape.  The commentary consists of only a  few  pages,  with  virtually  nothing  in  terms  of quantitative information about locomotives, routes or workings.  But  this  is more  a  photographic  essay designed to touch emotions than feed the mind. Following his first volume covering all the northern lines of Peru issued in 2007, Peruvian expert Bob Whetham has followed up in 2008 with the concluding volume which covers the rest of Peru’s railways recounting the history of nearly thirty different systems on eight gauges ranging from 50 centimetres to 4 feet 8 1/2 inches which operated in widely diverse conditions on the coastal plains or the high Andes. Many of these railways have seen little published anywhere.    This concluding volume on Peru covers Peru’s most famous and operationally demanding main lines: the Central Railway and the Southern of Peru that ascend into the Andes feature prominently as do the systems that connect with them, many serving mineral enterprises in difficult to access areas. The two major three-foot lines: the FC Huancayo-Huancavelica and FC Cusco-Santa Ana [the Machu Picchu route] are covered in detail.  The railways on the plains that link the coast to the interior are not forgotten, some rarely visited by travellers. The final chapter examines the railways in territory ceded to Chile in 1883 covering the very early days of the Nitrate Railways and the Patillos Railway. Every known system is examined.
