En 1978 el editor inglés lan Alian publicó el libro escrito por Michael J. Fox Last Steam Locomotives of Spain and Portugal, que rememora los últimos años de la tracción vapor en estos dos países. Las fotografías procedían de muchos autores. El libro fue muy bien recibido y se agotó rápidamente. Muchas de aquellas imágenes originales llegaron a los archivos fotográficos de Brian Stephenson, uno de los coautores de este libro, tras la prematura muerte de Michael Fox en diciembre de 1997. Esas fotografías se reproducen ahora con una excelente calidad, los pies de foto las realzan y además se han añadido bastantes fotografías nuevas. Están representados RENFE, los ferrocarriles portugueses y los ferrocarriles de vía estrecha e industriales en este trabajo de muchos y renombrados fotógrafos del ferrocarril; desgraciadamente, un gran número de ellos ya ha desaparecido. Estas imágenes son un testigo singular de una era que ya es tan sólo un recuerdo.

Las locomotoras fabricadas por la American Locomotive Company siempre han cautivado a los entusiastas del ferrocarril. Muchas y diversas locomotoras salieron de sus factorías, tanto en tracción a vapor, como diesel, con algunas incursiones en el material eléctrico. Su fama alcanzó nivel mundial y prueba de ello es que sus locomotoras han circulado por países de los cinco continentes, siendo España y Portugal algunos de ellos. En nuestro país, grandes y pequeñas compañías confiaron la explotación de sus redes a las locomotoras Alco, circulando tanto en vía estrecha como de ancho ibérico. MZA, Norte, Renfe y CP con un buen número de unidades y las compañías mineras con algunos pocos ejemplares. En esta obra se describe la historia de las locomotoras que Alco y sus subsidiarias fabricaron para los ferrocarriles ibéricos. Manuel Galán Eruste, autor de diversos libros y publicaciones de índole ferroviario y colaborador habitual de Maquetren desde el comienzo de la publicación, ha trabajado más de una década recabando información de personas e instituciones para poder ofrecer las vicisitudes de estas locomotoras, algunas de las cuales pueden verse aún circulando por las vías de la península ibérica y la Argentina.

Eine Vielfalt größerer, kleinerer und kleinster Straßenbahnbetriebe gab es auf der iberischen Halbinsel. Vieles davon ist heute bereits spurlos verschwunden. Das Buch berichtet ausführlich auch über längst aufgelassene Betriebe und bringt viele Fotoraritäten von mitunter exotisch anmutenden Anlagen und Fahrzeugen. Teilweise entstanden Straáenbahnwagen auch nach amerikanischem Vorbild, was ebenfalls zur Typenvielfalt in beiden Ländern beitrug.

Wie sein Schulfreund Alfred Luft prägte auch Harald Navé die „Wiener Schule”, deren Ziel es war, anstelle von reinen Lokporträts ausgesuchte Maschinen vor Zügen in besonders reizvoller Landschaft zu photographieren. Neben den letzten Dampflokomotiven der k. u. k. Zeit galt das Interesse von Harald Navé besonders auch dem ausländischen Eisenbahnbetrieb. Viele seiner oft auch berufsbedingten Reisen in zahlreiche Länder Europas und nach Übersee konnte er dazu nutzen, die dortigen Bahnen in eindrucksvollen Bildern festzuhalten. So finden sich in seinem umfangreichen Archiv nicht nur Fahrzeuge aus Österreich, sondern zum Beispiel ebenso auch aus der Bundesrepublik und der DDR, der Schweiz, Frankreich oder Portugal, aber auch von exotischen Bahnen in Indien, Indonesien, Australien oder Südamerika. Unser Buch setzt dem photographischen Werk des leider viel zu früh verstorbenen Harald Navé ein kleines Denkmal. Es zeigt eine Auswahl seiner schönsten Bilder. Sie entstanden zwischen den fünfziger und sechziger Jahren auf seinen Reisen.

Entre los muchos extranjeros que visitaron y fotografiaron nuestros trenes, Denis Trevor Rowe ocupa, sin lugar a dudas, un lugar más que destacado. Su pasión por el ferrocarril le llevó a recorrer medio planeta a la búsqueda de las locomotoras de vapor más antiguas, los trenes de vía estrecha más singulares y los tranvías más primitivos. Pero, sin duda, fueron los ferrocarriles españoles los que más interés suscitaron en Trevor Rowe desde su primera visita a nuestro país en 1953. Enamorado de España, de la que afirmaba con orgullo que la sentía como su segunda patria, Trevor plasmó con su cámara imágenes irrepetibles de toda clase de trenes y tranvías a lo largo y ancho de la península ibérica, en los cinco viajes que realizó hasta 1968. En muchas de ellas aparecen ferrocarriles hoy desaparecidos, como el tren del Bidasoa, Castro a Traslaviña, Olot a Gerona, Flassa a Palamós, Villena a Alcoy y Yecla, Valdepeñas a Puertollano, La Loma, Tharsis, Rio Tinto y un largo etcétera en el que tampoco faltan imágenes de los tranvías de Barcelona, Valencia, Sevilla, Madrid, Zaragoza, Oviedo o Bilbao, entre otros.  Fruto de sus numerosos viajes a nuestro país fue la publicación en Gran Bretaña de diversas obras dedicadas a los ferrocarriles españoles. La primera de ellas fue Railway holiday in Spain, publicada en 1966, seguida de Continental Railway Handbooks Spain & Portugal, en 1970. Años más tarde se publicaría en nuestro país una reedición de este último trabajo, convenientemente traducido al castellano, bajo el título Los ferrocarriles de España y Portugal, editado por la editorial Aldaba en 1989. Por último, en 1995 publicó en dos volúmenes el libro Narrow gauge railways of Spain & Portugal, editado en Inglaterra por Plateway Press.  Probablemente, es la primera de las obras que Trevor Rowe dedicó a nuestro país la menos conocida entre los aficionados españoles y, de hecho, en su día llegaron a España muy pocos libros. En la actualidad, los afortunados propietarios de algún ejemplar los conservan, con razón, como auténticas joyas. Por ello, el cincuentenario de su publicación es una magnífica excusa para su reedición en castellano, con el fin de darlo a conocer al gran público y, además, rendir el merecido homenaje a la memoria de su autor quién, lamentablemente, nos dejó el pasado 28 de febrero de 2015. El texto original se ha publicado en su integridad pero el contenido del libro se ha enriquecido notablemente con la incorporación de numerosas fotografías a gran formato, muchas de ellas inéditas, conservadas en el Museo Vasco del Ferrocarril, institución a la que en 2014 Trevor Rowe cedió todas las imágenes tomadas por él en España en sus diversos viajes. De este modo, el volumen presenta un impresionante retrato de los ferrocarriles y tranvías de la península ibérica en los años cincuenta y sesenta. Aunque no dudamos que el principal atractivo de este libro se encuentra en las magníficas imágenes tomadas por Trevor Rowe a lo largo y ancho de la península ibérica, es también un placer leer el ameno texto con el que Trevor Rowe nos narra unas vacaciones ferroviarias en las que, en la primavera de 1965, recorrió buena parte de nuestro país. De sus palabras se desprende, ante todo, el gran amor que sentía por España pero en ellas también refleja curiosos aspectos de la vida cotidiana española y de la actividad de sus ferrocarriles, proporcionando un retrato de gran interés de cómo eran las cosas hace medio siglo o, al menos, de cómo nos veían desde el extranjero en aquella época.

By the time the British railway enthusiasts discovered the narrow gauge railways of Portugal in the late 1960s the various companies operating the lines had long since been assimilated into the national system of broad and narrow gauge railways under the aegis of CP (Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses). This happened on 1 January 1947, a year before similar events in Britain. Apart from the occasional – and it seems very occasional indeed – visitor on business or en passant by boat to other climes who might find the narrow gauge terminus in, say, Porto (anglicised Oporto) the railway enthusiast was absent. There was one notable exception in Mr John Gibbons who sampled the Sabor line soon after its final extension was opened and so impressed was the editor of The Railway Magazine with his description that he published it twice (April 1940 and August 1940) the second time in greater detail than the original.  Therefore this album relates to CP days post-1960, its purpose being, on the one hand, to give those enthusiasts not lucky enough to have visited the country the sight of things they have missed and, on the other, to evoke a nostalgic response in those who were able to see the narrow gauge even if it was in the autumn of its existence. Apart from opening and closure dates (month and year only) there are no chunks of history to wade through. Rather, such will have to be winkled out of the captions. Likewise, no lists of locomotives or rolling stock neither heights or lengths of bridges and so on appear; all those are comprehensively dealt with in the definitive volume Narrow Gauge Railways Of Portugal by W.J.K. Davies. So, just turn the pages and wallow in the pictures! (Irwell Press).

Steam locos operated later in Spain and Portugal than in most other Western European countries, lasting until the mid-1970s. In 1974 steam in Portugal survived on the broad gauge main line from Oporto almost to the Spanish frontier and operated up the beautiful Douro Valley, running alongside the river for most of its length. From this main line three branch lines ran into the hills, and all were very different both in terms of the landscape they inhabited and the trains that operated the services. Steam could still be found in Spain as late as 1977, on the Andorra–Escatron coal railway. With a wonderful collection of color photography, George Woods documents the final years of steam on the railways of Portugal and Spain.

In the second half of the nineteenth century, after 30 years of political turmoil, Portugal was finally able to build transport infrastructures on a large scale. The first rails were deployed in 1852, but it was not until 1867 that railways in Minho were decreed, even though this idea had been proposed to the government since the 1850s. However, only in the 1870s did construction actually begin. Based on the debates that took place in both houses of the Portuguese parliament (as well as the Dicionário Biográfico Parlamentar to identify the congressmen) and on the reports of the Portuguese engineers, to which content analysis was applied, this study aims to explain the development of the Minho railway network between the 1850s and the 1890s, a period of great investments in public works.
