In Danzig ausgebildet, zog es den Maschinenbauer Paul Levy (1876–1943) 1904 in den Nahen Osten zur Hedschasbahn, wo am 1. September 1908 die Bahnstrecke von Damaskus im heutigen Syrien nach Medina in Saudi-Arabien in Betrieb genommen wurde. Im Mai 1906 heiratete Paul Levy seine Cousine Ida und lebte mit ihr in Damaskus und Beirut. Im Ersten Weltkrieg erhielt er das Eiserne Kreuz. Zurück in Deutschland, wurde Levy Dezernent für Rationalisierung im Werkstättenwesen bei der Deutschen Reichsbahn in Altona und 1930 zum „Direktor bei der Reichsbahn“ befördert. 1935 versetzte die Bahn den jüdischen Beamten vorzeitig in den Ruhestand. Levy zog nach Berlin-Zehlendorf. Die Emigration gelang ihm nicht mehr. Mit rund eintausend anderen Menschen wurde er am 26. Februar 1943 von Moabit nach Auschwitz deportiert.

Built in the turn of the twentieth century, the Hejaz Railway was initially mocked in Europe as a wildly improbable scheme. Still used partially in Syria and Israel, the railway was constructed at colossal cost. This book provides details about the construction of this project based on British documents from a technical and cultural point of view.

Railway expansion was symbolic of modernization in the late 19th century, and Britain, Germany and France built railways at enormous speed and reaped great commercial benefits. In the Middle East, railways were no less important and the Ottoman Empire’s Hejaz Railway was the first great industrial project of the 20th century. A route running from Damascus to Mecca, it was longer than the line from Berlin to Baghdad and was designed to function as the artery of the Arab world – linking Constantinople to Arabia. Built by German engineers, and instituted by Sultan Abdul Hamid II, the railway was financially crippling for the Ottoman state and the its eventual stoppage 250 miles short of Mecca (the railway ended in Medina) was symbolic of the Ottoman Empire’s crumbling economic and diplomatic fortunes. This is the first book in English on the subject, and is essential reading for those interested in Industrial History, Ottoman Studies and the geopolitics of the Middle East before World War I.

Der Ausbau der Eisenbahnnetze im 19. Jahrhundert kam zur rechten Zeit, um den zügigen Transport der Massenheere zu ermöglichen, die mit der Allgemeinen Wehrpflicht entstanden waren. Friedrich Engels, Helmuth von Moltke und William Sherman, Theoretiker und Praktiker des Krieges, haben diese technische Innovation konzeptuell verarbeitet: die Bahn als Rückgrat der Aufmarschplanung oder aber als Angriffsziel. Mit den tragfähigen Ansätzen dieser bedeutenden Geister werden militärische Operationen kontrastiert, die eine Farce waren: Lawrence von Arabien gegen die Hedschasbahn und der Plan des Alfred von Schlieffen, der den Eisenbahnaufmarsch gegen Frankreich ins Absurde überzog. Damals wie heute: Generell erscheinen Konzepte, sich mit neuer Technik ein Rezept für den schnellen Sieg zu erschließen, fragwürdig. –  Lutz Unterseher ist Soziologe und Politikwissenschaftler. Seine Forschungs-, Lehr- und Beratungstätigkeiten hat er im internationalen Rahmen wahrgenommen.
