The Andes rank as the world’s longest uninterrupted mountain range, extending over 4,000 miles parallel to the west coast of South America. With summits up to 20,000 ft, they act as a barrier separating the Pacific seaports from the mineral riches of Argentina, Chile, Peru and Bolivia. Few areas of the world can be less promising for the aspiring railway builder …added to the problems of topography are extremes of climate, regular geological instability, and continuous political barrier …a triumph of engineering skill and ingenuity over formidable natural obstacles. First published in 1963, „Railways of the Andes“ has been out of print for 30 years. This new Edition incorporates Fawcett’s oroginal text – unaltered and unexpurgated – plus a new Preface and Introduction. It includes some of Fawcett’s original maps, supplemented by some more detailed new cartography, ‚period‘ artwork and advertisements and a fine selection of photographs, dating from the 1870s, many being the work of the Author himself.

Phil Girdlestone started his steam career on the Ffestiniog Railway, where he was to remain for 16 years, during what was a critical time in that railway’s development.. Whilst there he became influenced by the work of David Wardale and Dante Porta on modernising steam power, and applied their principles firstly to the Alco 2-6-2 ‘Mountaineer’, and secondly, and more controversially to the ex Penrhyn Quarry 2-4-0 ‘Linda’ which he rebuilt for coal firing with a Gas Producer system and Lempor exhaust. In 1985 he joined a team working on an EEC sponsored rehabilitation of steam locomotives for the Sudan Government Railway and subsequently he became CME to a team trying to keep the South African 2 foot gauge Alfred County Railway going. Phil moved to South Africa, where he stayed for the rest of his life, and whilst the ACR project was to ultimately fail, he completely rebuilt and modernised two of the line’ s NGG16 class Garratts to considerable effect. Further work was to involve broad gauge steam in Australia and Russia and narrow gauge steam in Argentina. (CMSS).

(Verlagsmitteilung).

Misemer, Sarah M: Moving forward, looking back. Trains, literature, and the arts in the River Plate, Lewisburg [Pa.}: Bucknell University Press . 2010 – 249 pages : illustrations ; 24 cm , ISBN 978-0-8387-5765-9
Moving Forward, Looking Back: Trains, Literature, and the Arts in the River Plate by Sarah M. Misemer argues that the train is paradoxically an anachronistic and modern indicator of River Plate national identity when seen in the literature and film of the region. The train’s connections with new concepts of time and space, as well as the rise of the industrial age, make it a symbol loaded with cultural meanings. This project traces the importance of the train as a market of key moments in Argentine and Uruguayan history from 1854 to the present (nation-building, neo-colonialism, modernization / industrilization, dictatorship, privatization, and debt crisis). Through textual, filmic, and historical accounts this study demonstrates that the train is not simply an icon of the nineteenth-century’s Naturalist movement, but rather a powerful contemporary metaphor for authors and directors of the River Plate as they communicate/create collective memory and cultural values in a region mired in uneven spurts of modernization and progress. Many critical shifts in concepts of time and society’s consciousness of modernity were derived from the railway and World Standard Time in the nineteenth century. These innovations restructred the way people viewed the world and dealt with „public“ and „private“ time. The forward, projectile motion along a linear track mimicked the passage of public chronological time. Conversely, the train also invoked a private, nostalgic view of tim as the traveler was yanked from his/her traditional view of the space/time continuum via the train’s velocity. Travelers observed the landscape „disappear“ in their backward glance from the window–although the landscape and interior compartment’s space remained stagnant. This optical illusion caused passengers to perceive the world in new ways. Thus, the train unveils a conflictive blend of nostalgia and progress in the River Plate, as these countries move forward, but look back. Celebrated authors such as Jorge Luis Borges, Alfonsina Storni, Armonia Somers, Juan Carlos Onetti, Roberto Cossa, Eduardo Rovner, and Felisberto Hernandez, all feature the train prominently in their work and are included here. The previous lacuna in academic criticism on this topic is puzzling considering the persistence of authors in Argentina and Uruguay who continue to focus on the train. Misemer’s work offers a beginning study of the underrepresented field of railway literature and film in the Hispanic world by some of the most influential authors and cinematographers of their time. Each chapter reveals how rail systems denote watershed moments in the region’s development, and shows how these are transformed and transfixed in the River Plate’s population’s memories through fictional and visual renderings. This book is offered as a first step in acquainting rail aficionados and lovers of literature with the literary terrain of the Southern Cone through a multi-genre approach. –Book Jacket.

Livio Dante Porta, a brief biography. Steam locomotive development in Argentina. Fundamentals of the Porta compound system for steam locomotives. Some steam leakage tests. The Ferroccarril Austral Fueguino. This book arose from correspondence with Dante Porta after we had published the English edition of André Chapelon’s La Locomotive a Vapeur, and the idea of bringing some of Porta’s papers to a much wider audience was irresistible. Porta has always been described as Chapelon’s ‘disciple’, which is certainly true, but was very definitely his own man, with his own ideas. He also worked in a more technologically advanced age, and whilst this inevitably regarded steam as outmoded, it did give Porta access to materials unknown to Chapelon, and different (computer) design techniques, all of which he used to maximum effect. In my opinion, the fact that Porta never worked within the traditional railway company set-up, being an academic by training, gave him much more freedom to adopt a different approach. And finally, of course, Porta taught and encouraged those brave few who continue to work on the concept of advanced steam power. Contained within this book are three of Porta’s papers, one public and two previously circulated privately. Porta himself wished us to publish his paper Fundamentals of the Porta Compound System for Steam Locomotives, and this is the core of the book. However, to give an introduction to much of Porta’s work, and his overall philosophy, we have also included the paper he presented to the Manchester Centre of the Institution of Locomotive Engineers in March 1969 entitled Steam Locomotive Development in Argentina – its contribution to the future of railway technology in the under-developed countries. The third paper is, again, a private one, and deals with the subject of steam leakage. (Camden Miniature Steam Services).

Webb, Brian: Armstrong Whitworth. A pioneer of world diesel traction, Lydney: Lightmoor Press in conjunction with the Railway Correspondence & Travel Society . 2010 – 184 pages : illustrations (some color) ; 29 cm , ISBN 978-1-899889-45-7
Within this volume the late Brian Webb covers Armstrong Whitworths involvement in the development of diesel traction on the banks of the River Tyne from the beginning of the 20th century until 1937 when the company ceased production of diesel railway motive power. This company was well ahead of its time and was the pioneer of diesel traction with products built in various gauges not only for the home market but for export to such far-away places such as Argentina, Brazil, Ceylon, India, Australia and the West Indies. If the company had continued with the development of its products and sales to Britain’s railways had been much greater the history of Britains railways in the last century would have been very different. This book is rich in the history of Armstrong Whitworths involvement with diesel traction and includes rare photographs and technical diagrams covering the development of shunters, railcars, railbuses, articulated train sets and main line locomotives and is a welcome addition to the serious railway enthusiast’s collection.
Wright, Winthrop R: British-owned railways in Argentina. Their effect on the growth of economic nationalism 1854-1948 (Latin American Monographs; Band 34), Austin: Univ Of Texas Press . 2014, ISBN 978-0-292-77297-7
During the nineteenth century, British-owned railways grew under the protection of an Argentine ruling elite that considered railways both instruments and symbols of progress. Under this program of support for foreign enterprise, Argentina had by 1914 built the largest railway network in Latin America. During the first decades of the twentieth century, the railways were successful in following a policy of calculated disregard for Argentine interests in general. However, following the end of World War I, the British economic empire began to decline and Argentine economic nationalism grew. A number of popularistic political movements incorporated economic nationalism into their platforms, and even among the ruling elite there were signs of increasing nationalistic sentiment. Although most studies of economic nationalism have emphasized the importance of the middle-class Radical party in the rise of xenophobia, Winthrop R. Wright’s study shows that antiforeign economic nationalism was not entirely a reaction to the conservative elite. Between 1932 and 1938 the nationalistic programs of General Agustin Justo’s government—basically a conservative regime—led the British interests to decide to sell their holdings. The British govemment had arrived at a position of supporting the economic withdrawal of the large British-owned firms long before Juan D. Perón appeared on the political scene. Perón combined traditional Argentine economic nationalism with his own scheme to gain power over all elements in Argentina. His solution to the railway problem, although more dramatically executed, did not differ greatly from that of the conservative Justo. Perón purchased the railways outright in 1947–1948, but his use of nationalism was in reality covering his own inability to outbargain Britain and the United States following the conclusion of World War II.

[The paper explores the experience of travelling on Buenos Aires‘ Underground Railways (Subte) during the first decades of the twentieth-century. Reconstructing representations of passengers and their experiences through visual and textual sources, the paper shows how this underground mobility was a meaningful practice that expressed ambivalent sentiments towards progress and the rhythm of modern urban life. On the one hand, there was popular fascination with new technologies as well as a celebration and exaltation of this encapsulated mobility as a rational organisation of space in relation to time. On the other hand, the Subte was criticised as a form of regimentation and dehumanisation which turned passengers into automatons.] - Thomson, Ian: Transandine Railway Projects Between Argentina and Chile.
