One of the most challenging engineering feats in railroad construction, the Chihuahua al Pacífico railroad of Mexico was conceived in the mid-19th century and opened in 1961. Photo-journalist Glenn Burgess covered the final construction for newspapers in Texas, exploring the engineering challenges and the possibilities for commerce. His black and white photographs taken with a 4×5 Speed Graphic camera provide an important record of this engineering wonder. Don Burgess adds both historical and personal context for the articles through notes and interviews. The collection is illustrated with over 100 photographs and several maps.

Los ferrocarriles desempenaron en la Revolucion mexicana un papel protagonico. El proposito de esta publicacion es destacar la participacion del gremio ferrocarrilero en el movimiento popular que cambio el rumbo de la vida social, politica y economica de Mexico, a principios del siglo xx. Por la naturaleza del tema, constituye un testimonio y un justo reconocimiento a los trabajadores del riel por su participacion en una lucha que en 2010 cumple cien anos de su iniciacion. Desde el comienzo de la sublevacion, el uso militar del ferrocarril se generalizo no solo para el traslado de los ejercitos a lo largo del pais, sino que adquirio una importancia estrategica en los procedimientos de la lucha armada. La faccion que los controlaba, garantizaba su movilizacion, podia emprender rapidos ataques, cercar poblaciones y, en ocasiones, tomar plazas a bordo de los trenes. Se relatan algunos de los pormenores de los hechos belicos que vivieron las tripulaciones de los trenes, auditores, telegrafistas y despachadores, jefes de estacion, mecanicos y peones de via. Se utiliza como hilo conductor la historia general de la Revolucion mexicana desde sus precursores hasta finales de 1929. Se incluyen los antecedentes de la construccion de la red ferroviaria en la epoca porfiriana, una sintesis de un siglo de historia hasta nuestros dias, y una antologia con fragmentos de algunas novelas, cuentos , canciones y corridos de diversos autores que vivieron o imaginaron ciertos episodios ferrocarrileros durante la lucha revolucionaria.

Brief Guide to the Special Exhibition of the Same Name Opens 7 October 2011 at the Deutsches Museum The special exhibition and this accompanying booklet are the result of research into the technical requirements for the construction of the Ferrocarril Mexicano. Mexico’s first railway line, running from the port city of Veracruz to the capital in the highlands, was built between 1837 und 1873, a time of political and social upheaval. The extreme topographical conditions made it necessary to build a large number of bridges and tunnels, and these, in turn, necessitated the very latest technology available at the time. The enormous social and economic significance of the project and the spectacular landscapes that lined the route also prompted many artists, including José María Velasco and Casimiro Castro, to deal more closely with this railway line in their work. Models of the two most important bridges have been specially created for this exhibition and will later go on display in the permanent Bridgebuilding Section of the Deutsches Museum.
